About

Play Based Learning: Meeting Standards Through Engaging Play Experiences in Preschool and Kindergarten

Play is how young children learn best—but creating meaningful play experiences that also address academic standards can feel challenging. EASTCONN's Play Based Learning Initiative is designed to help preschool and kindergarten teaching staff bridge the gap.

Through engaging professional learning and collaborative Professional Learning Communities (PLCs), teachers will explore how intentional play can strengthen children's executive function, social competence, language, problem-solving, and academic learning—all while addressing the CT Early Learning and Development Standards and CT Core Standards.

During trainings (12:00-3:00 at EASTCONN on 10/27; 12/9; 1/27; 3/2; with 3/30 as snow date if needed)
Participants will:
• discover practical, classroom-ready strategies that transform learning into meaningful experiences
• explore how to design invitations to play, provocations, play-based investigations, and engaging scenarios that spark curiosity, deepen thinking, and promote collaboration
• strengthen their understanding of their role as facilitators of play, learning how to intentionally scaffold children's thinking, language, and social interactions without taking over the experience.

During PLC sessions (Zoom 1:00-2:30 on 11/18; 1/13; 2/10; 3/24; 4/7)
participants will:
• reflect on implementation
• share successes and challenges
• collaborate with colleagues
• receive support to help with any challenges

*Please note: participants will attend both the training dates and the PLC dates*

Participants will leave with strategies they can immediately use to create classrooms where children are actively engaged, learning with purpose, and developing the executive function and social-emotional skills that are essential for lifelong success.

Whether you are just beginning your play-based learning journey or looking to deepen your current practices, this initiative provides the knowledge, support, and collaborative community to help play become a powerful vehicle for meeting standards while fostering joyful, meaningful learning.
