Twenty-five years ago, on September 11, 2001, a small town in Newfoundland became a beacon of hope for the world. Strangers opened their homes, communities chose generosity over panic, and thousands of people discovered that even in the darkest moments, humanity has the power to bring light. That day, 38 planes were diverted to Gander International Airport when the United States airspace closed for the first time in history. While the tragedy of 9/11 caused fear and uncertainty across the United States and around the world, Gander showed that compassion can shine brightest when it is needed most.
COME FROM AWAY is an uplifting story about resilience in the face of tragedy. After the attacks on the World Trade Center, several planes were diverted and had to make emergency landings. The people of Gander, Newfoundland stopped their lives to help the “Plane People” find shelter, hope, and comfort in a time of uncertainty and fear. People from all over the world came together, sharing stories, feelings, and experiences, creating unexpected connections and a sense of community.
