Dallas Center-Grimes will host a Battle of the Books competition for 5th - 8th grade students on Saturday, March 28, 2026. The contest will start at 9:00 A.M. and finish around 3:30 P.M.
Battle of the Books allows students to showcase their ability to use reading comprehension in a fun and competitive way while providing them with engaging, quality literature and a chance to compete against others at the same time.
Teams will consist of up to 4 students who work together to read a list of books before the contest. The reading list will have 20 book titles including Iowa Children's Choice Award, Iowa Teen Award, Newbery Award, and ALA award winning books.
During the contest, two teams will go head-to-head in a quiz bowl-style tournament. During the matches, teams will alternate answering questions. Questions will always have the title of a book from the assigned reading list as their answer. Teams will receive bonus points for knowing the author's first and last name. If a team gets a question wrong, the other team can steal and earn points. Each round will be 30 questions --15 questions for each team. We will have a pool play tournament with a championship bracket to follow. Each team will be guaranteed at least 3 matches. The winning team will get a trophy for their school, and each person on the top four teams will get a medal.
There will be a $20 registration fee per team to help offset the costs of the competition.
