About
Lunch & Learn: Harm ReductionAbout
The WISE Team of Parkway United Church of Christ is hostingThe event will run from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm in the Church
Fellowship Hall. Our guest speaker is Annie Vasquez, with the Forsyth Regional Opioid and Substance Use Team (FROST), of the Forsyth Behavioral Health Services.
Why are we having this event?
50% or more of people living with mental illness have substance use disorders – and vice versa – affecting 21 million adults.
Harm Reduction is a public health approach that meets people where they are, aimed at reducing the negative consequences associated
with substance use.
Harm Reduction is a social justice issue, acknowledging respect and the rights of people who use drugs as substance use treatment is
not a “one size fits all” approach.
“Some people think Harm Reduction ‘enables’ one’s addictive behaviors. On the contrary, Harm Reduction actually saves lives. We all incorporate some form of Harm Reduction in our everyday lives such as wearing seatbelts, bicycle helmets and/or use sunscreen,” said Andy Hagler, Chair of the PUCC WISE Team.
Examples of harm reduction within this context include: Use of Narcan, medication assisted treatment and needle exchange programs.
